Bayern’s Jamal Musiala Suffers Fractured Fibula, Set for Surgery in Germany

Musiala to miss up to five months following serious injury in Club World Cup quarter-final
Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala is facing another extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle in his left leg during Saturday’s (July 5) 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
The injury occurred late in the first half following a heavy collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Musiala screamed in pain and was stretchered off the pitch before being taken to a local hospital in Atlanta for initial assessment. On Sunday morning, the 22-year-old was flown back to Munich on a private jet chartered by the club, where he will undergo surgery.

Bayern confirmed the extent of the injury in an official statement released Sunday (July 6), calling it a major blow to the player and the team.
“This serious injury and the long period of absence are a real shock for Jamal and for all of us,” said sporting director Max Eberl. “Jamal has only just recovered from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He will receive everything he needs from us. We will support him intensely, be there for him and are already looking forward to his return to the pitch.”
Four to Five Months Out
Musiala is expected to be sidelined for four to five months, effectively ruling him out for the start of the Bundesliga season and potentially much of the first half of the 2025/26 campaign. The midfielder had only recently returned from a three-month absence due to a muscle injury.
According to Bild, the midfielder was transported via ambulance to the airport in Orlando and departed separately from the rest of Bayern’s delegation.
Reaction from the Football World
Donnarumma, who was involved in the incident, apologized to Musiala both on the field and via social media, expressing regret for the unintended clash. Bayern captain Manuel Neuer criticized the challenge, calling it reckless, while Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois publicly defended the Italian goalkeeper’s character.
“Everyone knows how important Jamal is to our football and the central role he plays in our team. Furthermore, the human impact is incredibly bitter and we all feel for him,” Bayern’s statement added.
Musiala, one of Europe’s brightest young talents, was instrumental for Bayern last season and is considered a core player for both club and country. His latest setback comes as the German side prepares for a crucial rebuilding phase under new manager Vincent Kompany.
