Bayern Munich decides to sign PSG’s Donnarumma to replace Manuel Neuer

The Bundesliga giants join Manchester City in the race for the Italian goalkeeper amid uncertainty over Neuer’s future.

Bayern Munich is preparing to turn the page on an iconic chapter in the club’s history, as the era of legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer nears its end. According to journalist Nicolò Schira, the German champions have set their sights on PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as a potential long-term replacement, joining Manchester City in pursuit of the Italian international.

At 39, Neuer remains the club’s No. 1 and enjoyed a strong 2024/25 campaign. However, with his contract set to expire in June 2026 and his international retirement already official, Bayern are proactively planning for the future between the posts.

Bayern Eyes Donnarumma as Neuer’s Heir

Sources close to the situation suggest Bayern Munich intends to offer Donnarumma a starting role as early as next season. The PSG goalkeeper’s future remains unresolved, with contract renewal talks reportedly on hold. The possibility of a transfer has increased as the player weighs a new challenge after four seasons in Paris.

Bayern’s interest adds weight to speculation that Donnarumma is open to leaving Ligue 1. The 25-year-old is considered one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers and has already been linked with several top clubs during the current transfer window.

Neuer’s Strong Final Campaign?

Despite his age, Neuer delivered a solid performance last season, making 40 appearances and conceding just 32 goals an average of 0.8 goals per match. While Bayern has not ruled out keeping the veteran for another year, club officials appear keen to ensure a smooth transition at the position.

The move also follows Bayern’s broader shift in recent seasons, which included saying farewell to long-time midfield leader Thomas Müller just days ago. The club is clearly entering a new era, and goalkeeping is no exception.
