Barcelona’s Ter Stegen May Undergo Surgery, Opening Door for Transfers

Veteran goalkeeper faces uncertain future as injury concerns and lack of starting role fuel speculation.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen could face months on the sidelines if he proceeds with a potential back surgery, sources close to the club revealed this week. According to Spanish outlet Jijantes, the German international is weighing up the option in a bid to resolve lingering back pain just as the new season prepares to kick off.

If Ter Stegen undergoes the procedure, Barcelona may seize the opportunity to temporarily remove him from the squad list, creating room for new signings. Among them could be Joan Garcia, a recently acquired goalkeeper. The move would also free up space in the wage bill, further facilitating Barcelona’s ongoing rebuilding under new head coach Hansi Flick.

Flick Does Not See Ter Stegen as First Choice

The 32-year-old’s future at Camp Nou has been under growing scrutiny. Flick, appointed earlier this summer, has reportedly communicated internally that Ter Stegen may not be his first-choice goalkeeper this season. This development has intensified internal discussions, with club insiders suggesting the player is “unhappy” with the idea of starting on the bench.

Despite that, Ter Stegen is said to be determined to fight for his place, unwilling to accept a secondary role without competition. Former German international Lothar Matthäus criticized the goalkeeper for resisting a transitional role, fueling further debate in Spain and Germany.

Turkish Giants Make Bold Move

Adding to the uncertainty, Galatasaray has reportedly entered the race for Ter Stegen’s signature. According to Spanish newspaper Sport, the Turkish champions have offered the keeper a four-year deal with a salary higher than his current earnings at Barcelona, estimated to be over €9 million annually.

Barcelona, navigating strict financial fair play regulations, may be open to offers if it helps balance the books and build a squad more aligned with Flick’s tactical vision.

History of Injuries and Competition

Ter Stegen’s position has been under pressure since 2024, when a knee injury sidelined him for an extended period. During his absence, Wojciech Szczęsny stepped in and impressed, further complicating the German’s return to the starting XI.

With preseason friendlies and the La Liga opener approaching, a decision from Ter Stegen and the club is expected soon. Whether it involves surgery, a temporary registration removal, or a permanent departure, his status remains one of Barcelona’s biggest storylines heading into the 2025/26 campaign.
