Barcelona may struggle to register Rashford

Marcus Rashford is officially set to join FC Barcelona on loan from Manchester United, but the club must first comply with La Liga’s financial regulations before the English star can be registered.
The agreement, as reported by multiple sources, includes a €14 million loan fee with a €30 million purchase option available in June 2026. Rashford becomes one of the most high-profile arrivals under new manager Hansi Flick, but the deal hinges on La Liga Rule 1.1, which ties spending on player wages to club revenue.
Under the rule, Barcelona can only register new players if they remain within their salary cap. Currently, the club’s financial situation means it must offload existing contracts to clear space for Rashford’s registration.
Among the possible departures is Andreas Christensen, who is reportedly not in Flick’s plans for the upcoming season. However, the most impactful exit would be that of goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, whose reported €20 million annual salary would entirely resolve the registration issue if he were to leave.
Barça Aiming to Avoid a Repeat of Dani Olmo Incident
The club’s hierarchy is determined to avoid a repeat of last season’s Dani Olmo registration saga, in which delays caused the player to miss several early La Liga matches due to non-compliance with Rule 1.1. Barcelona have just under a month to balance their books before the 2025/26 campaign begins.
Despite the complications, Spanish media remain optimistic. “At Barça, they’re confident they can count on Rashford,” said journalist Santi Ovalle of Cadena SER. The same optimism extends to other new arrivals, such as Joan García.
More Transfers Still Possible—Rodrygo Remains a Dream Target
Barcelona remain active in the transfer market and are expected to pursue more signings if player sales go as planned. One of the most ambitious targets is Rodrygo, who could leave Real Madrid this summer. Although signing a player from their fiercest rivals would be highly controversial, reports indicate Barça are ready to step in if the Brazilian becomes available.
However, financial constraints remain a major obstacle. Real Madrid reportedly value Rodrygo at over €100 million, a figure that would be difficult for Barcelona to match unless multiple high-salary players are sold.
For now, the focus remains on resolving the registration of Rashford Barça’s latest marquee signing and a potential game-changer in their attack.
