Barcelona cancels Japan tour after promoter fails to deliver $97 million payment

FC Barcelona has officially canceled the Japan leg of its pre-season tour following a serious breach of contract by the event promoter. The club announced that the promoter failed to meet financial obligations totaling €15 million (approximately $97 million), prompting the immediate suspension of scheduled activities in Japan.

Vissel Kobe Friendly Canceled Amid Dispute

The decision halts a highly anticipated match against Vissel Kobe, originally set for July 27, and marks a major disruption to Barça’s 2025/26 preseason plans under new head coach Hansi Flick.

Spanish outlet AS reported that Barcelona was expecting up to €20 million in total revenue from the Asian tour, with €15 million guaranteed. However, the payment was not received by the agreed-upon deadline, triggering a contract breach.

South Korea Friendlies Still Uncertain

Barcelona was also scheduled to play friendlies in South Korea, against FC Seoul (July 31) and Daegu FC (August 4). The club says these games will only proceed if “certain financial conditions” are met — a clear reference to the same promoter’s delayed payments.

Behind the scenes, the club’s leadership is reportedly frustrated with the situation, which they believe reflects poorly on Barça’s global preseason strategy and its connection with Asian fans.

Club Prepares for La Liga Opener and Rashford Debut

Barcelona’s official season debut remains unaffected. The club will kick off the La Liga campaign on August 16 against Mallorca. Key players including Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and Pedri are expected to return to competitive action as the defending champions aim to retain their title.

Meanwhile, the club confirmed the loan signing of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United. The English forward will wear the number 14 jersey for the upcoming season.
