Real Madrid wants Álvaro Carreras and Benfica president does not rule out negotiating him

The 22-year-old full-back is having the best season of his career and could be on the move after the Club World Cup.

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Álvaro Carreras, one of Benfica’s standout performers this season. The 22-year-old Spanish full-back has been on the radar of the Merengue club for some time, and now Benfica president Rui Costa has publicly addressed the possibility of a future negotiation.

In an interview with MARCA, Rui Costa made it clear that although no official offer has been received, the door is not closed for business.

“Álvaro Carreras? Real Madrid should make an offer. None have arrived so far. If one comes, we’ll see what happens,” said Costa.

Talks Only After Club World Cup, Says Benfica President

Benfica are currently competing in the FIFA Club World Cup, and the president made it clear that no transfer talks will be entertained until the tournament concludes.

“Now is not the time, and it will only be when the tournament and our participation is over. Until then, we don’t need to talk about anything. Carreras is here with us,” he added.

Contract and Transfer Value

Álvaro Carreras is under contract with Benfica until June 2029, giving the Portuguese side leverage in any negotiations. According to AS, the club is reportedly demanding €48 million (R$311 million) to release the player.

Meanwhile, Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda of OK Diario has claimed that Real Madrid are seriously considering the move and that Carreras could sign a five-year deal with Los Blancos.

Álvaro Carreras: Season in Numbers

The 2024/25 season has been the most productive in Carreras’ young career:

  • Appearances: 52 matches
  • Goals: 4
  • Assists: 5
  • Position: Left-back
  • Age: 22

The Spaniard has shown consistent attacking contributions and defensive solidity, making him an ideal long-term candidate to reinforce Real Madrid’s full-back options.

Why Real Madrid Are Interested

With uncertainty around the long-term future of Ferland Mendy and increased fixture congestion, Real Madrid are reportedly looking to add depth and youth to their defensive line. Álvaro Carreras’ versatility, physicality, and ability to push forward suit Xabi Alonso’s tactical approach, and his Spanish nationality helps maintain the club’s homegrown quota.
