“Almost Impossible to Train”: Enzo Maresca Blames Extreme Heat in U.S. Ahead of Chelsea vs. Esperance

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has raised serious concerns over the extreme heat in Philadelphia, just days before the Blues face Esperance in a crucial Club World Cup Group D match. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Maresca admitted the high temperatures are heavily impacting Chelsea’s training sessions.
“It is almost impossible to train a full session because of the weather. We are trying to save strength for the game,” said Maresca.
Brutal Heat Forces Chelsea to Cut Training Short
Temperatures in Philadelphia have soared to over 100°F (38°C) during the day, with nighttime heat lingering above 80°F (27°C) creating brutal conditions for players. The city has issued public health warnings and opened cooling centers for residents until May 25.
Maresca revealed that Monday morning’s training session was shortened drastically.
“This morning’s session was very short. Nothing more than that. We’ll do our best tomorrow to secure our place in the next phase of the competition,” he added.
Advantage for South American Teams?
The Italian coach pointed out that South American clubs, including Flamengo, may have an edge due to their familiarity with hot and humid climates.
“They are more used to playing in this type of temperature,” Maresca said, referencing Flamengo, who have already secured qualification.
Chelsea Go All-In Against Esperance
Despite the weather challenges, Maresca made it clear: Chelsea will not hold back. The team is prepared to rotate players and adapt their tactics to handle the conditions.
“It doesn’t matter, we will try to do our best in the tournament. We will have to make all the players available and adapt the game to the climate,” he said.
What’s at Stake?
- Chelsea face Esperance (Tunisia) on Tuesday (24), 10 PM Brasília time, at Lincoln Financial Field.
- A win guarantees qualification to the next round
- A draw or loss would leave Chelsea dependent on goal difference and on Flamengo’s result against LAFC.
Group D is still wide open, with Chelsea needing a focused performance despite the oppressive heat. Meanwhile, Flamengo are set to face LAFC at the same time and await the second-placed team from Group C potentially Bayern Munich, Benfica, or Boca Juniors.
