William Carvalho breaks record at Betis: «I defied the odds…»
The Portuguese international is the foreign player with the most appearances in the history of the Spanish team and achieved this record after recovering from (yet another) serious injury

William Carvalho made history for Betis last Sunday. The Portuguese international started for the first time since September 1, 2024 in the trip to Espanyol (2-1), in which they came away with a dramatic victory in injury time, and broke a record.
The midfielder is now the foreign player with the most appearances for the club (219), overtaking Andrés Guardado (218), former captain of the Seville club , and he can still increase that record by the end of the season. In total, counting Spanish players, the 33-year-old athlete is 25th on the list.
The Sporting- trained player reacted on social media to this special milestone. “219 games with this shirt! And this wasn’t just another game… It was the game that made me the foreign player with the most games in the history of Real Betis . At a time of the season when almost no one expected me to continue playing due to the serious injury I suffered. I defied the odds and achieved this record this season and I am immensely proud to represent this club, these fans and this city that welcomed me in such a fantastic way! Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey – this record is also yours!”, he wrote, recalling that he suffered a serious injury in September and only returned to the pitch in March.
William Carvalho still has a contract with Betis until the end of next season, therefore, June 2026. For now, in addition to 219 games, he has 11 goals and 16 assists, and also a title, the Spanish King’s Cup , in 2021/22, and this year he can also celebrate winning a European trophy… the UEFA Conference League – they won the first leg of the semi-final, at home against Fiorentina (2-1).
