Liverpool legend unforgiving of Alexander-Arnold: ‘He decided to become a rival’
Jamie Carragher spoke about the departure of the full-back, who is expected to join Real Madrid

What has been expected for a long time has been confirmed: Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool at the end of this season. The right-back’s contract with the Reds will expire in the summer and will leave Anfiel after nine seasons in the first team. The English international is now expected to move to Real Madrid .
Among the various reactions to the official announcement of Alexander-Arnold’s departure is that of Jamie Carragher, a Reds figure who played his entire career for the club from the city of the Beatles.
“Leaving Liverpool is not easy, nor should it be. We all know that there is a football pyramid and that the prestige of Real Madrid and Barcelona has put them at the top for a long time…,” he said in his column in The Telegraph . He continued: “There are many examples of great players who have done brilliant service wherever they have been but who no longer feel an emotional connection to anyone. Owen is the most obvious. His relationship with the Kop [ the famous Anfield stand ] broke down after he left Anfield.”
“ Liverpool fans didn’t believe that Alexander-Arnold saw his path in the same way as Owen and Beckham because he said his dream was to be captain of the club and follow in the footsteps of his idol Gerrard. The fans will obviously be angry. I like to see a kid born in Liverpool playing for Real Madrid . Part of me thinks, ‘Well done!’ but the competitive side of me also thinks that swapping Liverpool red for Real Madrid white means he has chosen to become a rival…”
