Al-Ahli beats Kawasaki Frontale and wins the Asian Champions League

Summary

Al-Ahli won their first Asian Champions League after beating Kawasaki Frontale 2-0 this Saturday in a final played in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Two Brazilians shone and were decisive in the trophy going to the Saudis: Galeno scored the great goal that paved the way for the triumph, and Roberto Firmino provided two assists – one for his compatriot and another for Kessié.

STAR OF THE FINAL AND THE TOURNAMENT

Galeno’s great goal, with a beautiful shot from the edge of the box, was crucial for Al-Ahli to gain some peace of mind and beat Kawasaki Frontale. But it was Roberto Firmino who was named the man of the match after providing two assists and having a great performance in Saturday’s match. More than that: the Brazilian was named the best player of the competition and, as captain, was responsible for lifting the trophy.

STARRING CAST

Despite failing to challenge Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal for the Saudi league title, Al-Ahli finally achieved a historic feat with the all-star squad they have assembled since last season. The starting line-up this Saturday included goalkeeper Mendy (ex-Chelsea), defenders Demiral (ex-Juventus) and Ibañez (ex-Roma), midfielder Kessié (ex-Barcelona), and forwards Roberto Firmino (ex-Liverpool), Galeno (ex-Porto), Mahrez (ex-City) and Toney (ex-Brentford). Midfielder Alexsander (ex-Fluminense) was also on the bench.

VACANCIES IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

This unprecedented achievement qualifies Al-Ahli for two competitions in the coming years. The first, the Intercontinental Cup to be played at the end of 2025, involving other continental champions. The other, only four years from now: if FIFA maintains the competition formula and qualification criteria for the next Club World Cup, the Saudis would be guaranteed a place in the 2029 edition.
