Great news for Bayer Leverkusen at this crucial stage of the season. Florian Wirtz , the team’s star player who has been out of action since early March, is back in Xabi Alonso’s squad for Saturday’s game against Union Berlin .
The winger, who has been struggling with an ankle injury, returns to help the team in the fight to defend the Bundesliga title , in which Leverkusen are six points behind leaders Bayern .
“He is fit and back in the squad. He can play from the start. I have always said that with Florian we are a better team. He is a player who can decide games. We need him and he was missed, especially in the Champions League and the German Cup. We played much better with him,” said Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.
During his absence, the club were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Bayern and the German Cup after a defeat by third-division Arminia Bielefeld.
The German international has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027, but Bayern Munich have already confirmed their interest in the player. “Right now he is focused on getting back to his best form as quickly as possible. He wants to get back into the team and enjoy football. This is not a topic for us, we don’t talk about it,” Alonso said of a possible transfer.
