Election of new Pope is a talisman for Barcelona
In the last three conclaves in which Barça played, those that elected John XXIII, John Paul II and Francis, the ‘blaugrana’ always won big.
The death of Pope Francis has led to the need for a meeting of the Papal Conclave, the body composed of cardinals from around the world to elect the new Supreme Pontiff. And there is one club for whom this moment, in which the cardinals gather in the Sistine Chapel until there is white smoke and a new Pope, seems to be a talisman: Barcelona .
In the last three papal conclaves in which Barcelona played, in 1958, 1978 and 2013, the Blaugrana not only won but also thrashed… 4-0. During the election of John XXIII, the team won 4-0 against Real Madrid . It was the same result that 20 years later they applied to Las Palmas and, in 2013, during the election of Francis, they won by the same score against Milan .
This year, given that the conclave must ideally meet 15 days after the Pope’s death (although it could be up to 20 days, to allow all the cardinals to arrive in Vatican City), it is due to begin on 6 May. On that day, Barcelona will play again, in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals , away to Inter .
