Boca Juniors sack Gago after defeat in ‘superclásico’

Fernando Gago has left his position as Boca Juniors coach after just over six months in the role. His departure comes after the team’s 1-2 defeat to rivals River Plate in the Superclásico .

“We want to inform you that we have made a decision. Fernando Gago and his technical team are here to stay. It was not easy, as he is a homegrown player, but we are here to make decisions,” said Mauricio Serna, director and member of the Football Council of the Argentine club.

Gago, a former Argentina and Boca midfielder who took over in October, is the club’s third consecutive coach to leave without winning a trophy, after Jorge Almirón and Diego Martínez. Boca have won just 17 of 30 games under Gago and were knocked out of the Copa Libertadores early , losing in the second round to Alianza Lima of Peru on penalties.

Assistant Mariano Herrón will take over on an interim basis while Boca look for a new head coach, according to the Argentine press. Gustavo Quinteros, Gerardo Martino and Gabriel Milito are some of the names linked to the Xeneize team .
