Transfer Market: Textor confirms imminent arrival of Paulo Fonseca at Lyon
Portuguese coach prepares to succeed Pierre Sage
Lyon owner John Textor confirmed on Tuesday that Paulo Fonseca is preparing to succeed Pierre Sage as the club’s manager.
“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, yes, Paulo Fonseca will be our next coach. He still has some things to sort out with his previous club [ Milan ]. On Thursday, he will at least be at the stadium,” he began by saying in an interview with AFP , leaving a word to Pierre Sage.
“It is clear that he was the perfect man for this job and we saw the magic work. But although he may have been the perfect man for this chapter, he only recently became a coach and Lyon are a big European club. This year we have performed poorly compared to our potential. Now we need more than magic. We need preparation, consistency and more experience,” he said.
Paulo Fonseca is thus preparing to return to France, where he previously managed Lille in the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 seasons. The Portuguese coach started the season at Milan , but was fired in December, being replaced by Sérgio Conceição.
