Enzo Fernández recalls his arrival at Chelsea: “It was very difficult”
Argentine midfielder swapped Benfica for Stamford Bridge club in January 2023
After half a season at a great level at Benfica (29 games, 4 goals), Enzo Fernández joined Chelsea in January 2023 for 121 million euros.
About to complete two years in England, the Argentine recalled, in statements to ESPN, his first days at Stamford Bridge: «When I arrived it was very difficult, the first year and a half here: changing coaches, the club wasn’t doing well, injuries, personal problems…»
Despite the high transfer fee, Enzo said he did not feel pressured by the price tag: “It didn’t affect me. I tried to face the situation responsibly, with pleasure, without pressure. I wasn’t happy with what I was showing, then I got injured, a lot of negative things happened, I tried to move on, but today I feel very good, as does the team, and we hope to continue on this path.”
After the adaptation period, the Argentine international confessed that he is more confident, especially since Enzo Maresca took over as coach of the English team: «I learned the position I had to play in and, over time, I began to understand what the coach wanted. He [Maresca] explained to me what he wanted and I began to understand the concept, reading the games. There is still a long way to go.»
“On a personal level, I have been feeling very good. The team has demonstrated a very strong character, always working hard and with humility, showing that it is possible to achieve great things,” he said.
In 21 games, Enzo Fernández has three goals and eight assists. Chelsea have won four of their last five league games and are second in the Premier League , four points behind leaders Liverpool .
