Marc-André ter Stegen’s quest for a fresh start at Girona has taken a devastating turn. After leaving Barcelona on loan in search of consistent minutes, the German international is set to undergo surgery following a muscle injury sustained during Girona’s clash with Real Oviedo.

Surgery Scheduled for Friday

Girona officially confirmed on Wednesday that the goalkeeper suffered a significant thigh injury. The club’s medical staff has opted for surgery, which is scheduled for Friday (6th).

While an official return date hasn’t been set, early estimates from Transfermarkt suggest a layoff until at least early April. However, the full recovery timeline will only be determined after the procedure.

A Career Plagued by Fitness Issues

This latest setback adds another chapter to Ter Stegen’s frustrating injury record. Since late 2023, the German shot-stopper has spent more time on the treatment table than on the pitch:

  • November 2023: Back injury (86 days out).
  • September 2024: Tendon tear (214 days out).
  • Recent: Recurrent back issues (140 days out).

For a player who was once considered among the world’s elite, these persistent physical hurdles are becoming a major concern for both Barcelona (where he is under contract until 2028) and Girona.

World Cup Hopes Hanging by a Thread

The primary motivation behind Ter Stegen’s move to Girona was the German National Team. Following Manuel Neuer’s retirement, the starting spot for the upcoming World Cup was wide open.

Ter Stegen moved to Estadi Montilivi to prove his fitness and claim the No. 1 shirt. Instead, this surgery puts his international ambitions in serious doubt. With the tournament approaching, Germany may be forced to look elsewhere if their veteran keeper cannot find a way to stay fit.
