Tyrell Malacia was reportedly minutes away from flying to Istanbul to finalize a move when a phone call from technical director Jason Wilcox halted the transfer, leaving the Dutchman stranded and “fuming.”

The Wilcox Intervention

In a move described by Dutch outlet Voetbal International as “bizarre,” Jason Wilcox personally intervened to block Tyrell Malacia’s exit just hours before the winter window closed. Malacia, who has struggled for minutes under Michael Carrick (and previously Ruben Amorim), had already agreed on terms with an unnamed Turkish club and was at the airport ready to undergo a medical.

The 26-year-old is said to be in “total disbelief” and “furious” with the decision, as he was desperate to secure regular playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The sudden U-turn wasn’t tactical, but forced by necessity. Manchester United’s star signing Patrick Dorgu who has been a revelation this season suffered a serious hamstring injury during the 3-2 win against Arsenal.

  • The Diagnosis: Dorgu is expected to be sidelined for up to 10 weeks, potentially out until mid-April.
  • The Safety Net: Despite having Luke Shaw fit, and versatile options like Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, Wilcox decided that losing Malacia now would leave the squad too thin for the final stretch of the season.

End of the Road: A Free Agent Summer

While Malacia is forced to stay at Old Trafford for now, his long-term future is settled. Reports from the Manchester Evening News suggest the club has already informed both Malacia and Casemiro that they will be allowed to leave as free agents when their contracts expire this June.

With only two minutes of Premier League action this season, Malacia now faces a frustrating four months in the “shadows” of Carrington, acting as emergency cover for a team that has already decided his fate.
