JEDDAH – The relationship between Karim Benzema and Al-Ittihad has reached a breaking point. The former Real Madrid captain has formally requested to be excluded from the squad for this Thursday’s clash against Al-Fateh, citing a total impasse in contract negotiations.

While many suspected a tactical move by manager Sérgio Conceição, sources confirm the decision came solely from the 38-year-old striker. Benzema has reportedly rejected the club’s latest renewal offer, signaling a potential exit from the Saudi Pro League.

The Contract Standoff

Benzema’s current deal is set to expire in June 2026. With negotiations at a standstill, the Frenchman is now in a position where he could explore a return to European football as a free agent.

The standoff comes as a surprise given Benzema’s pivotal role in the team since his arrival in 2023. Last season (2024/2025), he was the cornerstone of Al-Ittihad’s domestic double, netting 21 goals.

Evolution on the Pitch

Despite the off-field drama, Benzema’s efficiency remains elite. In the current 2025/2026 campaign, he has already scored eight goals in 14 appearances. However, his playing style has shifted:

  • Pure Finisher: This season, Benzema has yet to record a single assist, focusing almost entirely on his role as the team’s primary goal-scorer.
  • Impact: While his creative numbers have dropped, his presence in the box remains the most dangerous in the league.

What’s Next?

By refusing to play against Al-Fateh, Benzema is sending a clear message to the board: the current terms are unsatisfactory. If a middle ground isn’t found soon, one of the Saudi Pro League’s biggest icons could be heading for the exit door much sooner than expected, with several top European clubs likely monitoring the situation.
