Marseille president Pablo Longoria has confirmed that Ethan Nwaneri will return to Arsenal in June, describing a permanent transfer as “unrealistic” for the French giants.
No Option to Buy for the Hale End Prodigy
Despite the instant impact made by the 18-year-old at the Stade Vélodrome, Longoria was quick to manage expectations regarding Nwaneri’s future. Speaking to RMC Sport, the OM chief clarified that the loan agreement with Arsenal contains no option to buy.
“Let’s be clear: a purchase option is not realistic,” Longoria admitted. “He is one of Arsenal’s main assets for the future. For us, his value lies in his talent and sporting performance. We want to create the ideal environment for this young diamond to thrive.”
A Dream Debut: Goal vs Lens

Nwaneri’s life in Ligue 1 couldn’t have started better. Making his debut last Saturday (January 24) in a high-stakes clash against RC Lens, the English midfielder needed just 13 minutes to find the back of the net. His goal helped secure a vital 3-1 victory, ending Lens’ winning streak and keeping Marseille’s title hopes alive under Roberto De Zerbi.
Why the Loan?
After signing a new long-term contract at the Emirates last summer, Nwaneri found first-team opportunities limited under Mikel Arteta this season, totaling just 12 appearances, mostly in cup competitions.
The loan to Marseille was strategically designed to give him elite minutes in a high-pressure environment. As part of the deal, Arsenal could receive a loan fee of up to €4 million (£3.4m) based on performance milestones, while Marseille covers the player’s full salary for the duration of his stay.
