Inter Milan have reportedly intensified their pursuit of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez, viewing the Argentine international as the perfect long-term successor to Yann Sommer.

According to journalist Germán García Grova, the reigning Serie A champions have made significant strides in negotiations. The 33-year-old World Cup winner is said to be considering a “change of scenery” after five historic seasons at Villa Park, where he transformed from an Arsenal backup into arguably the best goalkeeper in world football.

Replacing Yann Sommer at the San Siro

The move comes as Inter Milan prepare for life after Yann Sommer. The Swiss veteran, now 37, is expected to depart when his contract expires in June 2026. The Nerazzurri board believes the time is right for a world-class transition, and Martínez with his immense leadership and experience in high-pressure environments is the priority choice to take the gloves at the San Siro.

Representatives from the Italian club have reportedly met with Martínez’s camp recently to discuss the foundations of a potential agreement. For Inter, securing a back-to-back Yashin Trophy winner would be a massive statement of intent on the European stage.

From Arsenal Fringe Player to Global Icon

Martínez’s rise is one of the most remarkable stories in modern football. After a decade of loan spells at clubs like Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham, and Reading, his career took flight following his 2020 move to Aston Villa.

At Villa Park, “Dibu” became an undisputed starter and a fan favorite, leading the club back into the Champions League. His heroics for Argentina winning the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles solidified his status as a global icon. While he has been linked with Manchester United in the past, Inter Milan now appears to be the most serious suitor for his signature.

What This Means for Aston Villa

Losing Martínez would be a significant blow for Unai Emery’s side. However, after years of loyal service, the club may find it difficult to stand in the way of a move to one of Italy’s most prestigious clubs. While no formal bid has been submitted yet, the dialogue between Inter and the player’s agents suggests that a summer transfer is becoming a distinct possibility.
