Manchester United have officially vetoed Joshua Zirkzee’s proposed move to AS Roma, following the club’s decision to dismiss manager Ruben Amorim. The change in leadership has forced the Italian side to abandon their pursuit of the Dutch striker.
In comments reported by Fabrizio Romano, Roma director Ricky Massara confirmed that negotiations are now off the table.
“Manchester United has closed all doors with the change of manager,” Massara said. “It now seems very unlikely that they will negotiate Zirkzee.”
The cancellation marks a sudden shift in the striker’s future, as Roma had been actively working on a deal before Amorim’s departure from Old Trafford.
Zirkzee’s Limited Role at Manchester United This Season
Joshua Zirkzee has struggled for regular minutes during the current campaign. The arrivals of Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha have pushed the Netherlands international down the pecking order.
As a result, Zirkzee has been largely confined to substitute appearances and occasional starts in domestic cup competitions, limiting his impact and development at the club.
Management Change Could Revive Zirkzee’s Prospects
Manchester United moved quickly after Amorim’s dismissal, appointing Darren Fletcher as interim manager. Fletcher oversaw the team in a Premier League draw against Burnley, during which Zirkzee was given another opportunity to feature.
The forward came on in the closing stages, replacing Matheus Cunha. According to SofaScore, Zirkzee played 16 minutes and registered two shots, though he was unable to influence the final result.
While he is not expected to immediately assume a leading role under the next manager, the club believes he could see increased involvement in the coming weeks.
Solskjær’s Potential Return Could Shape Zirkzee’s Future
Behind the scenes, Manchester United are in advanced talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjær regarding a return to the managerial role. Reports indicate the Norwegian has expressed willingness to take charge again following Amorim’s exit, with an official announcement expected soon.
Solskjær’s possible appointment could be pivotal for Zirkzee. After a difficult start to the season, the 23-year-old striker may be presented with a renewed chance to impress, regain confidence, and reestablish himself within the first-team squad.
