Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has refused to guarantee Kylian Mbappé’s presence in the starting XI for the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona, stressing caution after the forward’s recent injury.
Mbappé has been reintegrated into the Real Madrid squad after missing the semi-final victory over Atlético Madrid due to a physical issue. The French star is expected to be fully recovered for Sunday’s Clásico, scheduled for 7:00 pm (UK time), but Alonso insists no unnecessary risks will be taken.
Xabi Alonso Urges Caution With Mbappé
Speaking ahead of the final, Alonso explained that the decision on Mbappé’s involvement will be made collectively by the coaching staff, medical team, and the player himself.
“It’s a decision we will make together with the player, the coaching staff, and the doctors. It’s always necessary to assess the risk. We have to understand what’s at stake and then take responsibility for the decisions made. We’re not kamikazes. It’s a controlled risk,” Alonso said.
Mbappé’s Fitness Improving Ahead of the Final
Mbappé was sidelined for the semi-final and was replaced by Gonzalo García, who impressed in his absence. The young forward scored three goals against Betis and started against Atlético Madrid, making a strong case for continued involvement.
Despite García’s form, Mbappé remains first choice when fully fit.
“He’s much better. Against Atlético, he reached his limit and we decided not to push him, but always with the idea that he would return if we reached the final. He will train with the group. We will evaluate and decide whether he starts or plays fewer minutes,” Alonso added.
Possible Real Madrid Lineup
Real Madrid could take the field with the following XI:
Courtois; Valverde, Rüdiger, Raúl Asencio (Huijsen), Carreras; Tchouaméni, Bellingham, Camavinga; Rodrygo, Vinícius Júnior, Gonzalo García (Mbappé).
Alonso emphasized the importance of game management in a high-stakes final:
“It’s a final and you need to know how to compete to win it. We are ready. It’s a football match, a final. Anything can happen. We are focused on what we can do and how to play the game.”
Barcelona’s Expected Lineup
Barcelona are expected to welcome back Lamine Yamal, who was substituted during the semi-final against Athletic Bilbao. A likely Barça lineup includes:
Joan García; Koundé, Eric García, Cubarsí, Balde; Pedri, De Jong, Fermín López (Dani Olmo); Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Ferran Torres.
With Mbappé’s status still uncertain, all eyes will be on Alonso’s final decision ahead of one of the most anticipated Clásicos of the season.
