Barcelona are stepping up plans to reinforce their defense and have expanded their shortlist beyond Murillo. The Catalan club is now also monitoring Micky van de Ven, Tottenham’s highly rated Dutch defender, as they prepare for the second half of the European season.

With the board prioritizing the arrival of a top-level center-back, Barça see defensive stability as essential for the coming months. Murillo, currently shining at Nottingham Forest, remains a strong candidate, but new names are gaining traction behind the scenes.

Van de Ven Fits Barcelona’s Defensive Profile

According to Sport, Barcelona have identified Van de Ven as an ideal fit for their project. The 24-year-old defender is considered one of the most complete center-backs in the Premier League, combining pace, physical strength, and quality ball distribution.

Another key factor is versatility. Van de Ven can also operate as a left-back, something Barcelona’s technical staff highly values amid recurring defensive injuries and rotation needs.

Financial Challenge, but Optimism at Camp Nou

Van de Ven is under contract with Tottenham until mid-2029, which makes any potential deal complex. Still, despite ongoing financial restrictions, Barcelona believe they could generate the resources needed to pursue the defender if negotiations open.

This season, the Dutch international has made 27 appearances for Spurs, scoring six goals and providing one assist, reinforcing his reputation as a modern, offensive-minded defender.

Competition From Real Madrid Looms

Barcelona are not alone in tracking Van de Ven. Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the defender’s situation, though no formal offers have been submitted so far. The presence of another Spanish giant could significantly increase competition if Tottenham show any openness to talks.

Van de Ven is currently in his third season at Tottenham and seventh as a professional. Before moving to England, he played for Wolfsburg in Germany and FC Volendam in the Netherlands.

Tottenham Remain Active in the Market

While Barcelona assess their defensive options, Tottenham continue to explore reinforcements of their own. After failing to secure a deal for Savinho, Spurs have turned their attention to Omar Marmoush, the Egyptian forward currently competing in the Africa Cup of Nations.
