Antoine Semenyo has officially selected his new shirt number at Manchester City, marking another step in his adaptation to life at the Premier League champions. The Ghanaian forward will wear the number 42 jersey for the second half of the 2025/26 European season, following his move from Bournemouth.

At his former club, Semenyo wore the number 24 shirt, but that number is already taken at City by Croatian defender Joško Gvardiol. As a result, the attacker opted for a number with personal significance rather than forcing a change.

Speaking to Manchester City’s official website, Semenyo explained the decision behind his choice.

“It was my first number at Bristol City when I signed my contract and it has always stayed with me. It was 42 or 24 and, as 24 was not available, I went back to my first number. That was the inspiration,” he said.

Historic Meaning Behind the No. 42 Shirt

Manchester City also highlighted the symbolic weight of the number 42. The jersey was famously worn by Yaya Touré, one of the most iconic players in the club’s modern history. During his eight seasons at the Etihad, the Ivorian midfielder won three Premier League titles, three League Cups, and one FA Cup, leaving a lasting legacy at the club.

By choosing the same number, Semenyo embraces both personal meaning and a piece of City history.

Semenyo Ready for Competition Under Guardiola

Semenyo is well aware that breaking into Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup will not be easy. The Ghana international primarily operates as a winger, a position where competition is fierce within City’s star-studded squad.

Players such as Savinho, Jérémy Doku, Phil Foden, and Rayan Cherki are all options in wide attacking roles, while Bernardo Silva has also featured on the wing throughout his career despite being a natural midfielder.

Rather than being discouraged, Semenyo has welcomed the challenge.

“Joining a club like this and getting to know the players who have already played in my position will be great. I want to be one of those who achieve the best numbers at the end of the season,” he stated.

The forward also emphasized his desire to contribute collectively rather than focus solely on individual accolades.

“I want to be part of the team. You want to win trophies, you want to be with the best in the world. The perception is simply about being involved. I thank God for that,” Semenyo added.

Manchester City’s Upcoming Fixtures

Manchester City return to action this Saturday (10) when they host Exeter City at the Etihad Stadium in the third round of the FA Cup, with kickoff scheduled for 03:00 pm (UK time). After that, Guardiola’s side will travel to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle United in the English League Cup semifinal on Tuesday (13) at 08:00 pm.
