Manchester City have moved swiftly in response to Joško Gvardiol’s serious injury, confirming the immediate return of defender Max Alleyne from his loan spell at Watford. Pep Guardiola personally confirmed the decision as City look to reinforce a depleted defence for the remainder of the season.

Gvardiol is expected to miss the rest of the current European campaign, prompting the Premier League champions to act quickly in the market.

Max Alleyne Recalled From Watford Loan

The 20-year-old centre-back had been on loan at Watford in the Championship, where he was gaining valuable first-team experience. Manchester City reached an agreement with Watford to terminate the loan early and bring the player back to the Etihad Stadium.

“Max has returned from his loan at Watford, and we thank Watford for how they treated the young player,” Guardiola said during a press conference on Tuesday (6), ahead of City’s match against Brighton.

Alleyne’s Development at Manchester City

Max Alleyne joined Manchester City in 2021 from Southampton’s academy for a reported €1.8 million. Since then, he has progressed through City’s youth system, featuring regularly at higher age levels before earning his first senior loan move.

This season at Watford, Alleyne made 17 appearances, establishing himself as a regular starter. He is also an England Under-21 international, regarded as one of the country’s promising young defenders.

Guardiola Confirms Further Defensive Absences

Manchester City’s defensive problems extend beyond Gvardiol. Guardiola also confirmed that Rúben Dias will be sidelined after suffering a muscle injury during the draw against Chelsea.

The Portuguese international is expected to be out for four to six weeks, while John Stones remains unavailable due to ongoing fitness issues.

Limited Options Ahead of Brighton Clash

With multiple defenders ruled out, City currently have only two recognised centre-backs available: Abdukodir Khusanov and Nathan Aké. The pair are expected to start together in Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Brighton, part of the 21st round of the competition.

As the season enters a decisive phase, Max Alleyne’s return provides Guardiola with an additional option, even as Manchester City continue to navigate a challenging injury crisis at the back.
