Mbappé scores twice to lead 10-man Real Madrid to comeback win in Champions League opener

Real Madrid began their Champions League campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Olympique Marseille at the Santiago Bernabéu, thanks to two goals from Kylian Mbappé — the second after Dani Carvajal’s red card left Los Blancos with 10 men.
Historic Night and Early Drama
The win marked Real Madrid’s 200th victory in Champions League history, cementing their status as the competition’s most successful club.
The visitors struck first in the 22nd minute through Timothy Weah, who broke free and beat Thibaut Courtois one-on-one. But just six minutes later, Real responded: Rodrygo was fouled in the box, and Mbappé calmly slotted home the penalty for 1-1.
End-to-End First Half
The opening half was played at high intensity, with Madrid hitting the post through Mastantuono and testing Gerónimo Rulli multiple times. At the other end, Marseille nearly regained the lead with chances from Aubameyang and Weah, but Courtois stood firm.
Carvajal Sent Off, Mbappé Delivers
Madrid continued to dominate after the break, with Mbappé rattling the crossbar in the 50th minute. But in the 71st, tension rose when Carvajal was shown a red card after a VAR review for an off-ball incident with Rulli, leaving Madrid a man down.
Despite the setback, Real showed resilience. In the 81st minute, Vinícius Júnior combined with Mbappé, whose shot was blocked by Medina’s hand inside the area. The referee pointed to the spot, and Mbappé converted again — his 50th goal for Real Madrid — to secure the comeback win.
