Real Madrid loses Rüdiger for three months, Xabi Alonso faces defensive headache

Real Madrid has been dealt a major blow: defender Antonio Rüdiger will be sidelined for the next three months after suffering a rectus femoris muscle injury in his left leg. The German, who had been a starter and leader in defense, is only expected back in 2026, according to club sources.

Xabi Alonso’s defensive dilemma

Rüdiger’s absence leaves coach Xabi Alonso with a difficult puzzle to solve. The German had formed a reliable partnership with Huijsen, and now Éder Militão is set to take over as a starter. For the third spot, Alonso must choose between David Alaba and Asencio, though the coach is reportedly not fully convinced by either option.

Rüdiger’s uncertain future at Real Madrid

Rüdiger’s long-term future is also in question. His contract with Real Madrid expires in 2026, and both the coaching staff and Florentino Pérez’s board have doubts about extending it.

The Merengues are already exploring replacements: Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté has approval at the club, while Santos talent Miguel Terceros has also been scouted.

Meanwhile, Rüdiger himself is drawing interest from Saudi clubs, who are prepared to offer a final lucrative contract to the 31-year-old defender.
