Manchester City vs Manchester United: Guardiola keeps Donnarumma’s role under wraps

The Manchester Derby takes center stage this Sunday (14), but Pep Guardiola has refused to confirm whether new signing Gianluigi Donnarumma will start. City host United at the Etihad Stadium at 12:30 pm (Brasília time) in the 4th round of the Premier League.

Speaking to City’s official channel on Friday (12), Guardiola was evasive when asked if the Italian goalkeeper would be in the starting lineup.
“Will Donnarumma start against Manchester United? We’ll see,” the manager said, before praising the 26-year-old:
“The transfer window gave us the opportunity to bring in Gigio. He has incredible experience with major clubs and the national team. We didn’t sign him to do what Ederson did; he has other qualities and will be good.”
Donnarumma joined City after leaving PSG and recently admitted that playing under Guardiola was a major motivation, calling it a “dream for any player.”
Competition in goal
For now, Guardiola has rotated his keepers. James Trafford, another new arrival this season, has been starting in recent matches. The coach suggested that the battle for the No.1 spot will continue deep into the season.
“He’s a goalkeeper for City. The season is long. Now we’re starting the real season, with lots of games, and everyone will be involved. They don’t believe it, but it’s going to happen,” Guardiola added.
