Rúben Amorim shuts down Mainoo exit talks: “He has to fight for his place at Manchester United”

Manchester United coach Rúben Amorim has made it clear he wants Kobbie Mainoo to stay at Old Trafford despite strong interest from across Europe. The midfielder has been linked with at least 10 clubs, including Champions League sides, but the manager insists the youngster must fight for space in the squad.
Amorim insists on keeping Mainoo
Speaking to reporters this Friday (29), Amorim reinforced his position on Mainoo’s future:
“Until it’s official, I can’t say much. I want Mainoo to stay at the club. He has to fight for a place in the starting lineup, and we need him. The situation won’t change. I understand that players who aren’t playing are disappointed, but everyone will get a chance. We have to fight.”
The 19-year-old midfielder has been a target this transfer window, with multiple approaches rejected. Barcelona, Juventus and several Premier League rivals are among those linked.
United react after Grimsby embarrassment
Amorim’s statement comes just days after Manchester United’s shocking elimination from the Carabao Cup by fourth-tier Grimsby Town, a result that intensified pressure on the Portuguese manager.
The Red Devils return to action on Saturday (30) against Burnley in the Premier League. United are still chasing their first consistent run of results this season after missing out on Champions League qualification by losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
Possible absences and starting XI
United could be missing up to five players for the clash. Lisandro Martínez, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui remain sidelined with injuries. Rasmus Højlund is expected to be left out due to transfer speculation, while goalkeeper André Onana is doubtful.
Probable Manchester United lineup (via WhoScored):
Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Luke Shaw; Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Sesko.
Burnley’s likely XI:
Dúbravka; Walker, Ekdal, Estève, Harman; Cullen, Ugochukwu, Larsen, Mejbri, Anthony; Foster.
Mainoo at a crossroads
Mainoo’s future remains a hot topic in Manchester. With Amorim publicly demanding commitment and rival clubs circling, the young midfielder now faces a decisive moment: fight for his place at Old Trafford or push for a move to secure regular minutes.
