Adam Wharton and Morten Hjulmand are alternatives to Carlos Baleba in the Manchester United transfer market

Manchester United are exploring last-minute options in the transfer market as their pursuit of Carlos Baleba stalls. The Brighton midfielder was the club’s top target, but talks have failed to progress, forcing the Red Devils to consider alternative names.

Two New Midfield Targets Identified

According to Laurie Whitwell (The Athletic), Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Morten Hjulmand of Sporting CP have emerged as United’s backup plans with the summer window entering its final days.

Adam Wharton: One of Crystal Palace’s standouts last season and previously monitored by Real Madrid, Wharton is highly rated and fits United’s midfield needs.

Morten Hjulmand: A regular starter for Sporting and key to Ruben Amorim’s system. However, the Portuguese side are reluctant to sell after losing striker Viktor Gyökeres to Arsenal earlier this window.

Midfield Shake-Up at Old Trafford

Currently, Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes are the only established starters in Erik ten Hag’s setup. Young talents like Kobbie Mainoo and Ugarte remain on the bench, which has sparked speculation over Mainoo’s future.

When asked, United’s manager clarified that Mainoo is viewed as a backup for Bruno Fernandes, though limited minutes could lead to a possible loan or transfer before the deadline.

Poor Start Accelerates Transfer Plans

Manchester United’s sluggish start to the 2025/26 Premier League season is pushing the club to act quickly. The Red Devils lost their opening match at home to Arsenal and drew with Fulham away, raising concerns over squad depth and creativity.
