Manchester City launches women’s under-21 team to boost player development

Manchester City has expanded its women’s football structure by creating a new Under-21 Next Gen team, designed to bridge the gap between youth categories and the senior squad. The team will compete in the Professional Girls Academy (PGA) U-21 League, with the goal of producing both elite athletes and well-rounded individuals.

Strong investment in youth structure

Already recognized for its commitment to academy football, Manchester City is one of the clubs investing most heavily in developing young talent in both men’s and women’s programs. The addition of the U-21 side strengthens the pathway between existing categories, including the U-16s, and the senior women’s team.

Izzy Christiansen leads the new project

Former England international and current coach Izzy Christiansen will take charge of the U-21s. With experience from City’s senior squad and the national team, Christiansen emphasized that the project is about more than just football.

“We want to create an environment where everyone leaves as better people and players,” Christiansen explained. “Football doesn’t always keep everyone forever, but we want to ensure these players grow as individuals as much as footballers.”

She also praised Manchester City’s infrastructure and philosophy, stressing that the club’s culture is as focused on character as it is on playing style.

Focus on development and first-team pathway

The Next Gen U-21 team gives City’s academy prospects a direct platform to prepare for senior-level football, helping the club secure its long-term pipeline of talent. The initiative underlines City’s ambition to dominate not only in the Women’s Super League but also in youth development.

First team gearing up for new season

While the academy expands, the Manchester City women’s senior team continues its preparations for the 2025/26 season. The squad has skipped pre-season friendlies to focus fully on training. Their campaign begins on Friday, September 5, with a high-profile WSL opener against Chelsea at 3:30 p.m. (Brasília time).
