Chelsea’s Wieke Kaptein confident for the new season: “If we play our own game, we have a good chance”

Chelsea midfielder Wieke Kaptein believes the Blues can challenge for every major trophy this season, including the Women’s Champions League, as the 19-year-old looks to establish herself further in one of the strongest squads in world football.

Chelsea aims to stay on top in England

With a roster packed with world-class talent, Chelsea enters the 2025/26 campaign as one of the leading contenders for domestic and European success. The London club made only limited moves in the transfer market this summer, relying instead on a blend of experienced stars and rising talents like Kaptein to maintain its dominance.

Kaptein on adapting and growing at Chelsea

Signed from Dutch side Twente, Kaptein has gradually integrated into Chelsea’s midfield. Last season, she scored four goals and added several assists, proving her potential at the top level.

“I’m excited to start the new season, learn new things, and hopefully win a lot of trophies,” Kaptein said. “When I moved from Twente to Chelsea, it helped that I already had international experience. Chelsea plays at the highest level, and that’s helped me grow a lot.”

Champions League ambition

Asked about Chelsea’s chances in Europe, Kaptein acknowledged the challenge but insisted the team has what it takes to compete with the best.

“If we play our own game, we have a good chance,” she explained. “Of course, winning every trophy will be tough again this year, but we have a strong team and I believe we can go far.”

First test of the season

Chelsea’s women’s team will open its Women’s Super League campaign on Friday, September 5, hosting Manchester City at 3:30 p.m. (Brasília time). Preparations have included friendlies against top European clubs like AC Milan, ensuring the squad is sharp ahead of the competitive season.
