Mastantuono could be the big news in Real Madrid’s lineup against Oviedo

Xabi Alonso may surprise in Real Madrid’s lineup for the second round of La Liga. Young Argentine Franco Mastantuono, just 18 years old, trained with the starting XI and could make his first start against newly promoted Oviedo.

Real Madrid look to stay perfect in La Liga

After opening the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Osasuna, Real Madrid now travel to face Oviedo on Sunday (24), at 4:30 pm (Brasília time). Their opponent is back in La Liga after 24 years, but the debut was tough: a 2-0 defeat to Villarreal, confirming that the club’s main goal will be avoiding relegation.

Mastantuono gains Xabi Alonso’s trust

According to AS, Mastantuono trained with the starters and is a strong candidate to replace Brahim Díaz in midfield. The Argentine youngster already impressed in his 30 minutes against Osasuna, showing technical quality and confidence on the ball, which earned him praise from teammates and the coaching staff.

Signed in June from River Plate, Mastantuono has only played one official match for the Merengues. However, his resume is already eye-catching: at just 16 years old, he debuted for River in 2024, and by the time he left, he had 64 appearances, 10 goals, and seven assists, in addition to a call-up to Argentina’s senior national team.

Upcoming challenges for Los Blancos

Real Madrid’s next fixtures include Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabéu on August 30. The Madrid derby against Atlético will take place in the seventh round, while the first Clásico against Barcelona is scheduled for matchday 10.
