Iñigo Martínez explains his decision to leave Barcelona for Al-Nassr

Spanish defender says Saudi offer was life-changing and focused on family’s future
Iñigo Martínez has opened up about his surprising move from Barcelona to Al-Nassr, the Saudi Pro League club featuring Cristiano Ronaldo and coached by Jorge Jesus. The 33-year-old terminated his contract with Barça after just one season, admitting that the Saudi offer was too significant financially and personally to turn down.
“I Couldn’t Believe the Contract”
Speaking to Onda Vasca, Martínez confessed he was stunned when Al-Nassr’s proposal arrived.
“If I had another year on my contract with Barcelona, I would probably think about it more. My salary there was good, my family was happy. But when I saw the offer, I couldn’t believe it. No one is prepared for that kind of contract, at least not me,” he said.
The defender highlighted that the move was not just about money, but also about ensuring stability and security for his family’s future.
From Barça Regular to Saudi Challenge
Martínez joined Barcelona in 2023 to strengthen a backline plagued by injuries. Paired with young talent Pau Cubarsí, he featured in decisive matches, helping the club win La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Copa del Rey all at the expense of arch-rivals Real Madrid.
A Career Built on Hard Work
The former Athletic Bilbao captain reflected on his journey through European football:
“I was a pawn in football, and I rose through the ranks through hard work and sweat. When you receive something like this, the impact is hard, especially for your family.”
