Manchester City reject €30m bid from Nottingham Forest for Rico Lewis as Guardiola blocks exit

Premier League champions hold out for at least €40M amid squad rebuild

Manchester City have turned down a €30 million (£25 million) proposal from Nottingham Forest for versatile defender Rico Lewis, with manager Pep Guardiola firmly opposed to his departure. According to Foot Mercato, the bid included €25 million upfront and €5 million in potential bonuses, but fell short of City’s €40 million valuation.

The decision was driven by both financial and sporting considerations. Lewis, 20, has become a trusted figure under Guardiola and a key piece of City’s ongoing rebuild. Last season, the academy graduate made 44 appearances and contributed seven goals and assists, cementing his role in the 2025–26 project at the Etihad Stadium.

City’s refusal comes amid a period of significant squad changes. Following a disappointing campaign, club stalwarts Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker departed, prompting the arrival of Rayan Aït-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, and Rayan Cherki. The new signings are expected to inject fresh energy as the team targets silverware this season.

Meanwhile, Guardiola has instructed the board to monitor Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, who is valued at €100 million. City are prepared to fund a potential move by selling Savinho, with Tottenham Hotspur showing interest.

With Lewis considered central to Guardiola’s tactical plans, City’s stance suggests only an exceptional offer would prompt reconsideration and Nottingham Forest’s opening bid was far from it.
