Ten Hag denies controversy with Cristiano Ronaldo and aims for titles with Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag has dismissed lingering speculation about his past relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting the Portuguese star “was never the problem” during their time together at Manchester United. Speaking after a pre-season friendly against Chelsea on Friday (8), the Dutchman stressed that his focus is now firmly on winning titles in Germany.

‘That’s in the Past’ — Ten Hag on Ronaldo

Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in 2021, but his spell under Ten Hag was overshadowed by reports of tension. The manager, who spent two and a half years at Old Trafford, rejected the idea of a personal rift.

“He was never the problem. I think that’s in the past,” Ten Hag said after the 2–0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where teenager Estêvão marked his debut with a goal.

Ten Hag also offered warm words for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner:

“I wish him all the best for the future and the best of luck,” he added, noting that United secured two trophies during his tenure after Ronaldo’s departure.

Fresh Ambitions in Germany

Now at the helm of Leverkusen, Ten Hag outlined his immediate objective adding to his career-long habit of collecting silverware.

“I love winning trophies; that’s what I’ve done since the beginning. My challenge here is to do the same,” he stated.

Leverkusen, who finished last season aiming to consolidate their position among Germany’s elite, will look to blend Ten Hag’s trademark defensive organisation with a sharper attacking edge.

Upcoming Fixtures

The Dutchman’s official debut comes on August 15, when Leverkusen face SG Sonnenhof in the DFB-Pokal. The Bundesliga campaign begins a week later against Hoffenheim, in what is expected to be the club’s main domestic challenge.

Ten Hag made it clear that his Manchester United chapter is firmly closed:

“It’s not about United anymore, that’s over. I’m looking forward and happy to be back at work.”
