Liverpool hesitant to buy Alexander Isak after spending £80m on Ekitike, says Carragher

Club legend Jamie Carragher has voiced concerns over Liverpool’s rumored pursuit of Alexander Isak, following the club’s £80 million signing of Hugo Ekitike earlier this window. The former defender believes Newcastle’s £150 million valuation of Isak is excessive and questions the club’s overall transfer planning.
Liverpool’s Bid for Isak Rejected
Liverpool reportedly had a £120 million bid rejected by Newcastle United for the Swedish striker. The Magpies are said to be holding out for £150 million, which Carragher calls “Mbappé money.”
Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Carragher said:
“It doesn’t make sense to sign a striker for that amount and then look for another for almost double. It seems like an impulsive, unplanned move.”
Carragher Defends Ekitike, Criticizes Isak Valuation
While the former Reds captain supports the signing of Ekitike, he expressed sympathy for the young Frenchman, who now finds himself overshadowed by ongoing Isak speculation.
“I feel a little sorry for Ekitike. He was signed, and then suddenly this Isak thing comes up. I want Liverpool to sign Isak—but not for £150 million. That’s Mbappé’s value.”
Isak Possibly Pushing for Exit
Carragher also speculated on Isak’s intentions, suggesting the player and his agent may have been quietly plotting an exit for some time.
“You can see he forced his way out. He and his agent seem to have made that clear months ago.”
Despite Isak’s impressive form, the Liverpool icon remains adamant that the club should avoid paying what he sees as an inflated fee, especially after already committing to a major investment in Ekitike.
