Barcelona rejects Chelsea’s offer involving Christopher Nkunku for Fermín López

Catalan club refuses player-swap deal as Chelsea lowers asking price for French striker amid squad overhaul

Barcelona has turned down a proposal from Chelsea involving French striker Christopher Nkunku in a swap deal for promising midfielder Fermín López, according to reports from Mundo Deportivo. The English club had hoped to use Nkunku as leverage in negotiations, but the La Liga giants rejected the offer and instead pursued a loan deal for Marcus Rashford from Manchester United.

Nkunku’s Struggles Spark Transfer Talks

Since his €60 million move from RB Leipzig in 2023, Nkunku has struggled to cement a place in Chelsea’s starting XI. That lack of form and fitness prompted the London side to explore a possible exit for the 27-year-old during the summer window.

Several top European clubs, including Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United, have expressed interest. United previously attempted a loan deal earlier this year, but talks collapsed. In light of market hesitance, Chelsea reportedly slashed Nkunku’s asking price from £65 million to £43 million around €76 million to €50 million.

Fermín López Remains Untouchable at Camp Nou

Barcelona remains firm on retaining Fermín López, despite growing interest. Reports in Spain indicate that Portuguese side Sporting CP, under Rúben Amorim, was even willing to pay €70 million (approximately R$449.5 million) for the 22-year-old, but Barça dismissed any offers.

López himself has shown no desire to leave the Camp Nou, and new head coach Hansi Flick has made it clear that the young midfielder is part of his long-term plans.

Chelsea Coach Addresses Nkunku’s Uncertain Future

Amid transfer speculation, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca addressed Nkunku’s status during an interview at the Club World Cup. “If Christo is here with us, it’s because we believe he can help us and stay until next season,” he said.

Maresca acknowledged the volatility of the summer transfer market. “There’s speculation not just about Christo, but several players. When the window is open, anything can happenarrivals or departures.”

Barcelona’s Transfer Strategy Taking Shape

Barcelona’s rejection of Chelsea’s offer underscores the club’s strategy to focus on youth development and long-term planning, rather than short-term solutions. By holding firm on Fermín and seeking Rashford on loan instead of a permanent deal for Nkunku, the club signals a cautious yet focused transfer policy under Flick’s leadership.
