Arsenal consider Eze and Gordon as alternatives if Rodrygo deal falls through

Gunners maintain pursuit of Real Madrid star but keep Premier League duo on standby

Arsenal remain focused on signing Rodrygo Goes, but the club has identified two backup targets Eberechi Eze and Anthony Gordon should negotiations with Real Madrid fall short. Mikel Arteta views the Brazilian winger as a top priority to reinforce the Gunners’ attack for the 2025/26 season.

Rodrygo Still the Main Objective

Despite nearing a deal with Viktor Gyökeres, Arsenal’s ambition stretches beyond a single reinforcement. According to journalist Charles Watts, Arteta remains keen on adding a world-class wide player, with Rodrygo topping the list.

Rodrygo’s future at Real Madrid is increasingly uncertain. The Spanish giants are undergoing squad adjustments, and the Brazilian international has attracted interest from Manchester City, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain. There is also speculation that he could be involved in a swap deal to bring Rodri to the Bernabéu.

Eze and Gordon Identified as Key Alternatives

If the Rodrygo pursuit falters, Arsenal could turn to Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace and Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United. Both players had standout seasons in the Premier League and fit Arteta’s tactical profile.

Eze, 27, registered 15 goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances for Palace during the 2024/25 campaign. His creativity and direct style have reportedly made him a priority backup option.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Anthony Gordon remains on Arsenal’s radar. Though he had a slightly quieter campaign scoring 9 goals and providing 6 assists he was previously targeted by Liverpool and remains highly rated for his pace and work rate.

Rodrygo Could Be a Domino in Madrid’s Midfield Plans

Rodrygo’s potential departure may also serve Real Madrid’s strategic goals. Reports suggest he could be used in negotiations to facilitate the signing of Rodri from Manchester City a move aligned with Xabi Alonso’s vision for the club. The Spanish midfielder is reportedly open to a return to La Liga under the former Liverpool legend’s management.
