Hofmann criticizes Xabi Alonso and exposes tense behind-the-scenes situations at Bayer Leverkusen

Jonas Hofmann has openly criticized former Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, highlighting what he described as poor communication and a lack of transparency during the 2024/25 season. The German international shared his views in an interview with Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, shedding light on the tense atmosphere behind the scenes at the Bundesliga club.
Midfielder Expresses Frustration Over Lack of Dialogue
Hofmann, 32, voiced clear disappointment over his treatment under Alonso’s leadership, stating:
“I was very disappointed with how things unfolded. This isn’t what I want in a high-level environment.”
The midfielder, who made just 690 minutes of competitive appearances throughout the campaign, said that his limited role was worsened by the coach’s failure to engage directly with players.
“I expect a coach to speak directly to his players. Going two weeks without any communication undermines confidence and competitiveness in training,” he added.
Not the First Time Hofmann Spoke Out
This latest criticism echoes earlier tension. In April, Hofmann publicly expressed frustration after being substituted during a match against Augsburg, saying he never received a proper explanation from Alonso.
During the 2024/25 season, Hofmann recorded two goals and one assist, largely falling out of the starting lineup as Florian Wirtz emerged as Leverkusen’s key creative player.
Alonso Attempted to Downplay Situation
At the time, Xabi Alonso now manager of Real Madrid responded cautiously to Hofmann’s remarks, saying:
“I try to be honest and explain my decisions. Everyone will have their moment. Hofmann has always shown commitment in training.”
Fresh Start Under Erik ten Hag
With Alonso’s departure and the appointment of Erik ten Hag as head coach, Hofmann now sees a renewed opportunity to revive his career.
“New coach, new opportunity. I’m a child of the Bundesliga and I want to return to my level,” said the veteran winger.
