Spain beat Germany 1-0 in extra time to reach first Women’s Euro final

Spain have reached the UEFA Women’s Euro final for the first time in history, defeating Germany 1–0 in extra time during a tense and tightly contested semi-final on Wednesday at St. Jakob-Park in Basel.
Midfielder Aitana Bonmatí scored the decisive goal in the second half of extra time, securing Spain’s historic place in Sunday’s final against reigning champions England.
Spain Dominate Early but Struggle to Break Through
As expected, Spain took control of the match from the opening whistle. Montse Tomé’s side enjoyed the majority of possession and pressed high up the pitch, creating several dangerous chances. Despite their attacking dominance, they were unable to beat Germany’s resolute defense in regular time.
Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was instrumental in keeping the score level, making a string of impressive saves in the first half. Meanwhile, Germany’s counter-attacks provided occasional threats, but Spanish keeper Cata Coll remained solid in goal.
End-to-End Action and Drama
The second half saw both teams push harder, with fluid transitions and tactical substitutions. Germany came close to scoring in the final minutes of regulation time when a powerful shot deflected off a defender and almost looped over Cata Coll. The rebound fell to Wamser, but Coll produced a stunning reflex save to keep the match goalless.
The deadlock forced extra time, where intensity remained high but chances were limited. Neither side managed to assert dominance in the first 15-minute period.
Bonmatí’s Moment of Brilliance Seals the Win
The breakthrough finally came in the 112th minute. Following a failed clearance by Germany, the ball found Aitana Bonmatí inside the box. The 2023 Ballon d’Or winner calmly controlled it, drove into space, and fired past Berger, scoring what would become the most important goal in Spain’s Women’s Euro history.
Germany pressed forward in the final minutes, but Spain held firm to protect their lead and celebrate a monumental achievement.
