João Félix’s return to Benfica is moving quickly from a dream to a reality

Portuguese star edges closer to emotional homecoming as salary agreement is reached; deal with Chelsea in advanced stages
João Félix is on the verge of a dramatic return to Benfica, the club where his professional career took off. According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, the 25-year-old forward has reached a salary agreement with the Lisbon giants and is now pushing for a permanent move away from Chelsea.
The Portuguese international reportedly accepted a significant pay cut to facilitate the deal, demonstrating his strong desire to return to his boyhood club. Despite earning considerably more in recent seasons, Félix agreed to Benfica’s salary proposal, which would place him among the club’s highest earners on par with team captain Nicolás Otamendi, who is also an exception to the club’s usual wage ceiling.
Benfica Moves to Final Negotiation Stage with Chelsea
With the player’s side of the deal virtually settled, Benfica has already submitted a €20 million offer for 50% of João Félix’s rights, valuing the player at €40 million below Chelsea’s current asking price of €50 million.
Sources close to the negotiation indicate that Benfica is willing to increase its bid to €25 million, aligning with half of Félix’s market value and potentially meeting Chelsea’s expectations. The London club is reportedly considering the proposal, especially given the lack of top-tier European offers and Félix’s own preferences.
Player Determined to Reunite with Bruno Lage
A key factor in the negotiation is João Félix’s personal desire to return to Benfica and work again with Bruno Lage, the coach who first gave him a chance in the senior team. Under Lage’s guidance in 2018–19, Félix quickly became one of Europe’s most promising young forwards, which led to his €127.2 million transfer to Atlético Madrid in 2019.
Despite offers from Saudi Arabian clubs, which would be far more lucrative financially, Félix is focused on continuing his career at the highest level in European football. The chance to play in the UEFA Champions League again is another motivating factor behind his decision to reject Middle Eastern proposals.
