US coach wants time with “American mentality” at 2026 World Cup

U.S. head coach emphasizes identity, resilience, and progress in the run-up to a home World Cup
As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues, United States men’s national team (USMNT) head coach Mauricio Pochettino has laid out his vision: a team built on the “American mentality” one of determination, excellence, and relentless pursuit of success.
In an interview with the official U.S. Soccer podcast, the Argentine manager brought in to guide the host nation on the global stage made it clear that results alone won’t define the project. Mindset and evolution are equally crucial.
“We need to compete and create a team capable of performing at the level we expect,” said Pochettino.
“Little by little, we’re evolving together and understanding what it truly means to defend the U.S. jersey.”
Recent setbacks, but belief remains
Despite recent disappointments including a Concacaf Nations League semi-final loss to Panama in March and a Gold Cup final defeat to Mexico Pochettino is encouraged by the long-term development of the squad.
“We’re representing a country that strives to be the best in everything it does,” he emphasized.
“In football, we carry the responsibility to foster that same mentality.”
World Cup 2026: A defining moment on home soil
With the U.S. co-hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, expectations are sky-high. Pochettino’s experience with elite clubs like Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain has positioned him as a steady hand in a critical transitional period for American soccer.
“We’re on a good path and happy with how things are unfolding,” he concluded.
