Jari-Pekka has also held a senior leadership position at WWF Finland, an environmental organization involved in conservation and the protection of nature.
His professional background is separate from his son’s career in ice hockey.
However, Jari-Pekka has followed Ukko-Pekka’s development and remained interested in events affecting his professional career.
In September 2026, Luukkonen revealed during an NHL.com interview that his father had informed him about trade rumors involving goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and the Buffalo Sabres.
The exchange provided a small glimpse into their continued communication about hockey.
Why Did His Father Name Him Ukko-Pekka?
One of the most interesting aspects of Luukkonen’s family background is the origin of his first name.

Svinhufvud served as president of Finland from 1931 to 1937 and was popularly known by the nickname “Ukko-Pekka.”
Jari-Pekka explained that the name Pekka also came from his own first name.
The family’s choice therefore combined a personal connection with a reference to Finnish history.
As Luukkonen progressed into international hockey, his distinctive first name attracted attention from North American fans and teammates.
During his time with the Sudbury Wolves, some teammates struggled to pronounce it correctly.
He later became widely known by the nickname UPL, formed from his initials.
