Hannes Steinbach’s Father: Burkhard Steinbach
Burkhard Steinbach is Hannes Steinbach’s father and one of the most influential figures in his basketball journey.
A former professional basketball player, Burkhard competed for Würzburg during the 1990s and early 2000s. He played as a center and became known for his imposing physical presence, rebounding ability, and competitive style.
Standing approximately 2.12 meters tall, Burkhard earned the nickname “Koloss von Moos,” meaning “Colossus of Moos,” during his playing career.
He made more than 100 appearances in Germany’s top basketball league and was a teammate of Dirk Nowitzki when the future NBA superstar was developing his professional career in Würzburg.
Their connection continued long after Nowitzki moved to the United States and established himself with the Dallas Mavericks.
According to a June 2026 feature published by FIBA, Burkhard later operated a horse farm in Moos, near Würzburg, while also working as an assistant coach with the club’s youth basketball teams.
This combination of professional basketball experience and youth coaching allowed him to become closely involved in his son’s development.
How Burkhard Steinbach Inspired His Son’s Basketball Career
Hannes Steinbach has openly credited his father with introducing him to basketball.
In a September 2024 interview with Pro Insight, Hannes explained that he initially became interested in the sport by watching his father play.
The family had a basketball hoop at home, where Hannes began playing informal games against Burkhard.
Those early experiences gradually developed into a serious interest in competitive basketball.
Burkhard subsequently became involved in coaching his son through the Würzburg youth basketball system.
Hannes revealed that his father had coached him during much of his basketball development and taught him the importance of continuous improvement.
In an interview referenced by FIBA, Hannes also discussed their close relationship, explaining that they regularly traveled together to and from basketball practice.
The time they spent training and discussing the sport helped establish a strong father-son relationship.
Although Burkhard had enjoyed a successful basketball career of his own, Hannes has emphasized that his parents never forced him to become a basketball player.
Instead, he developed his own motivation while benefiting from his father’s knowledge and experience.
Hannes Steinbach’s Mother
Hannes Steinbach’s mother has played a supportive role in his basketball journey, although her name and personal background have not been reliably established in major sports publications.
Unlike his father, whose professional basketball career is well documented, she has maintained a relatively private public profile.
Nevertheless, her importance to Hannes became evident during the 2026 NBA Draft.
According to German news agency dpa, whose reporting was published by Sportschau and Süddeutsche Zeitung, Steinbach embraced his mother immediately after NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced his selection by the Charlotte Hornets.
He then celebrated with his father, Burkhard, marking an emotional family moment as his NBA ambitions became reality.
During the televised draft coverage, Burkhard also humorously credited Hannes’s mother with providing some of the athletic ability that helped his son succeed.
Although additional information about her occupation or personal interests remains unavailable, her presence during one of the most important events of Hannes’s career demonstrates her place in his family support system.
Hannes Steinbach’s Siblings: Does He Have Brothers or Sisters?

Hannes’s father, Burkhard Steinbach, played alongside Nowitzki for Würzburg during the 1990s, before the future NBA champion moved to the Dallas Mavericks.
The two families maintained a personal relationship after their playing days together.
In an interview published by the NBA in June 2026, Hannes recalled growing up on his family’s farm near Würzburg, where Nowitzki and his family sometimes visited during the summer.
During those visits, Hannes spent time playing outdoors with Nowitzki’s children and enjoying life around the farm.
He explained that his childhood relationship with Nowitzki was not primarily centered on basketball, even though the former Dallas Mavericks star had known him since birth.
As Hannes developed into a promising basketball player, Nowitzki became a source of guidance and encouragement.
The connection received widespread attention during the 2026 NBA Draft.
After the Charlotte Hornets selected Steinbach with the 14th overall pick, Nowitzki delivered a special video message congratulating him.
In the message, Nowitzki expressed pride in Hannes’s progress and reflected on having known him since he was born.
He also jokingly remarked that Hannes was fortunate not to have inherited all of his father’s basketball characteristics.
Burkhard responded to the joke by crediting Hannes’s mother for his son’s athletic abilities.
The moment highlighted the relationship between the families and represented an important milestone in Würzburg’s basketball history.
