A damning new report from UEFA has brutally exposed the scale of Manchester United’s transfer market struggles, revealing the club as the highest net-spenders in Europe over the last five years.
According to UEFA’s European Club Finance and Investment Landscape assessment, United’s net-spend between 2021 and 2025 reached a staggering £692 million. Despite the heavy spending of rivals like Chelsea and Arsenal, the Red Devils stand alone at the top of a list no club wants to lead.
The “Billion-Pound” Reckoning
The report highlights how United’s failure to recoup value on major investments has left them exposed. While other clubs have spent big, United’s inability to sell effectively combined with the massive losses on players like Antony and the free departure of Paul Pogba has created a financial deficit that eclipses their London rivals:
The Premier League’s “TV Monopoly”
UEFA’s findings also underscored the terrifying financial gap between England and the rest of the continent.
- Premier League TV Revenue: €1.5bn (£1.3bn).
- The Rest of Europe: 53 other top-division leagues combined for just €1.6bn.
This dominance explains how English clubs can survive such “transfer mistakes,” with six Premier League teams currently in the Champions League Round of 16.
The Berrada Revolution: Turning the Tide
Despite the “brutal” UEFA exposure of past mistakes, United’s current leadership is already pointing to a brighter future. CEO Omar Berrada highlighted the club’s latest financial results as proof that the “strategic cost-management” sanctioned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe is working.
“We are now seeing the positive financial impact of our off-pitch transformation,” Berrada said, pointing to a £32.6 million operating profit recorded in the first half of this fiscal year a massive swing from the £3.9m loss in 2025.
“Football First” Results
Berrada was quick to link the financial recovery to on-pitch success, noting that United currently sits 4th in the Premier League under Michael Carrick.
“We continue to take a football-first approach,” Berrada added. “Today’s results demonstrate the underlying strength of our business.”
