Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has addressed the growing tension surrounding captain Cristian Romero, following the defender’s public criticism of the club’s current situation.

Romero recently took to social media to label the club’s lack of available players as “shameful,” sparking a debate over the internal atmosphere at the North London club. Speaking to the press, Frank acknowledged the captain’s passion but made it clear that public platforms are not the appropriate venue for such grievances.

Internal Rules vs. Passionate Leadership

While Frank defended the Argentine’s commitment stating that “Cuti gives everything on the pitch” he didn’t hide his disapproval of the method. “I wouldn’t have done that,” Frank admitted. “There is a way of doing things, and we have clear rules of conduct. However, we have discussed this internally with the management and the squad.”

Despite the public reprimand, Frank confirmed that Romero will remain club captain. The Danish coach views the outburst as an emotional reaction born from a desperate desire to win, rather than a lack of loyalty.

A Pattern of Dissatisfaction

This is not the first time “Cuti” has voiced his frustrations. A joint investigation by the BBC and The Athletic revealed a history of complaints from the defender, ranging from the club’s investment levels compared to Premier League rivals to the logistics of long-haul flights.

In January, Romero reportedly criticized the club’s leadership, suggesting some directors “only show up when things are going well to tell a few lies.”

Stability for Now

For now, the Tottenham board has ruled out stripping Romero of the captaincy or issuing a formal punishment. The focus remains on recovering injured players and restoring cohesion in the locker room. However, as reporters from The Athletic noted, while Romero’s tactical influence makes him “irreplaceable” on the pitch, further outbursts could force the club to reconsider his long-term future as a leader.
