Persistent injuries and Michael Carrick’s tactical shift have reportedly sealed the fate of the former Chelsea man at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are prepared to cut their losses on Mason Mount this summer, less than three years after his high-profile £60 million move from Chelsea. Despite arriving as a marquee signing under the previous regime, the 27-year-old is reportedly “no longer part of the long-term project” envisioned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS leadership.

Mount’s tenure in Manchester has been defined by a frustrating battle with fitness. After being limited to just 17 Premier League appearances last season, the England international has struggled with the same lack of consistency in 2025/26, managing only three goals in an injury-plagued campaign.

The Carrick Verdict

While Mount showed glimpses of his best form under Ruben Amorim, he has struggled to make an impact since Michael Carrick took the reins. The interim manager is reportedly seeking more reliable, “ever-present” options for his midfield engine room a profile that Mount has failed to meet.

Former United chief scout Mick Brown provided a blunt assessment of the situation:

“Man United will be open to offers for Mount if they come in. His injury record just doesn’t stand up. He’ll come back for a couple of games, then he’ll be out again. I’m not convinced he’s part of the club’s plans because of those injuries.”

Versatility vs. Availability

When fit, Mount has proven his worth, playing a key role in United’s run to the Europa League final last season. His ability to play as a No. 8, No. 10, or even on the flanks made him a favourite for Amorim, but in Carrick’s more structured system, his absence has been filled by more robust performers.

The “Exit Door” Strategy

With United planning a massive midfield revamp targeting the likes of Adam Wharton and Sandro Tonali selling Mount would free up significant space on the wage bill.

While a summer sale would mark a disappointing end to a player once compared to United greats, the “Ratcliffe Era” is proving to be ruthless when it comes to player availability and value for money.
