With his Manchester United contract finally expiring, Jadon Sancho faces a career-defining three months at Aston Villa. Will Unai Emery pull the trigger on a permanent deal?
Jadon Sancho’s turbulent five-year association with Manchester United is finally reaching its endgame. As the winger’s contract at Old Trafford prepares to expire this summer, the £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund will officially be recorded as one of the most expensive misfires in Premier League history.
Now on loan at Aston Villa, Sancho is fighting to prove he still belongs at the elite level. After Chelsea opted out of a permanent deal last year, Unai Emery handed the 25-year-old a “lifeline” and the results have been a mixed bag of frustration and flashes of brilliance.
The ‘Marcus Rashford’ Blueprint
The inspiration for Sancho is clear: his close friend Marcus Rashford. After a similarly difficult spell at United, Rashford rediscovered his world-class form under Emery during a brief stint earlier in 2025.
“Sancho was given a lifeline by Emery,” explains Aston Villa expert John Townley. “Having watched Rashford rediscover his confidence under Emery, this was a huge opportunity for Sancho to get his career back on track.”
Performance Check: One Goal, One Assist
Despite the high hopes, the numbers for Sancho’s spell in the Midlands remain underwhelming:
- Appearances: 25 (across all competitions)
- Output: 1 Goal, 1 Assist
- Highlights: A game-changing cameo against Chelsea on Boxing Day and a crucial winner against Fenerbahce in the Europa League.
While Emery has publicly stated that Villa would be interested in signing Sancho on a free transfer this summer, there is a catch.
The Wage Obstacle
For a permanent move to materialize, Sancho must accept a “significant” wage cut. Villa’s wage bill is already stretched, and the club’s hierarchy will not sanction a massive contract for a player with such low statistical output.
“His output is not enough,” Townley warns. “While Sancho has improved, there is still a long way to go before Villa hand him a permanent deal.”
