Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes took advantage of a rare free weekend to return to his roots, surprising fans in the stands of a Portuguese second-division clash.
With United out of FA Cup action following their third-round exit to Brighton, the 31-year-old playmaker jetted back to Portugal. While most Premier League stars might opt for a luxury getaway, Fernandes was spotted at the Estadio Capital do Movel, braving the chill under a green blanket to watch Pacos Ferreira take on Torreense.
A Loyal Friend: The Reason Behind the Trip
The visit wasn’t random. Fernandes was there to support his long-time friend and Pacos Ferreira midfielder, Francisco Ramos. The two shared a dressing room during their formative years in the Portugal youth set-up and have remained close ever since.
Speaking after the 0-0 draw, an emotional Ramos praised the United skipper’s humility: “He is always special. He is someone connected to me and my family,” Ramos said. “It is special to have a figure like him watching us. He values Portuguese football and I’m happy to have him close.”
Rest Before the Storm: United’s Top Four Charge
The brief hiatus comes at a crucial time for Manchester United. Under interim boss Michael Carrick, the Reds are currently on a nine-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, sitting firmly in fourth place.
Their last outing a dramatic 1-1 draw against West Ham saw Benjamin Sesko rescue a point in the 96th minute, maintaining the momentum built after victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.
Carrick admitted to “mixed feelings” after the draw, but the 13-day break allows his squad, led by Fernandes, to recharge before a high-stakes fixture against Everton next Monday.
As United enter the business end of the 2025/26 season, the leadership and fitness of Fernandes will be paramount. The captain is expected back at Carrington shortly to spearhead the final push for Champions League qualification.
